Senator MILLEN - The answers are : -

1.   No promise was given that I am aware of.

2.   It is not correct to say that the competitions have been abandoned. Competitions will take place, but they will be held in each State instead of all at one centre, as originally proposed. It was ascertained that the cost of holding the competitions at one centre would amount to about £600, whereas, if held in each State, the total expense would be limited to about £50. The Naval Board therefore regretted that it could not see its way to approve of the original intention being given effect to this financial year.
