Senator GUTHRIE (South Australia) . - I do not see any necessity for an alteration in this amendment, which embodies what has been the custom for years.

Senator Lt Colonel Sir Albert Gould - When we dealt with the Navigation Bill originally, why did we provide for payment before the second day of the month?

Senator GUTHRIE - I was not here at the time, and do not know. Under the award of the Court, wages are due on the first day of each month. All other workmen that I know of, except seamen, are paid weekly. Seamen are paid monthly, and it is only just that they should get what is due to them on the first day after the month has expired. I hope that the present custom will not be disturbed.
