Senator FINDLEY (VICTORIA) (Ministerwithout portfolio) - On the11th of this month Senator Ready asked the following questions -

1.   What quantity of American apples has been imported into Australia during the past four months of June, July, August, and September?

2.   What is the present duty on imported apples ?

3.   What duty does America impose on imported apples?

4.   What is the New Zealand Tariff on apples?

5.   What is the average cost of freight per barrel or case from America to Australia?

The following are the replies to the honorable senator's questions -

1.   Imports of American fresh apples during Tune, July, August, and September -

 

2.   2s. per cental.

3.   25 cents, per bushel. 4.1d. per lb. (No duty exceeding1/2d. per lb. to be levied on apples on and from 14th July to and including 31st December of each year.)

5.   Freight from San Francisco or Vancouver to Sydney, 14 dollars per ton measurement. As 24 cases go to a ton, this is equivalent to 2s. 51/2d. per case.
