Senator McGREGOR (South Australia) (Vice-President of the Executive Council) . - The honorable senator will recollect that a question was asked here with respect to the number of schools and teachers in the Northern Territory, and that in reply it was stated that there were three teachers. He will also recollect that the provision in this Bill is only for three months. So far as I know, the appointment of the highly-paid officer he referred to has not yet been made. The honorable senator will see that this vote is for the teachers who are already there. With respect to the appointment of the highlysalaried officer to whom reference has so frequently been made, I may say that if honorable senators will turn to the Works and Buildings Estimates which we have already passed, they will see that provision was made for the erection of several schools for the purpose of teaching native children, and also schools exclusively for halfcastes. These schools will be in operation probably before this highly-paid officer has an opportunity of exercising his ability in the Northern Territory.
