Senator McGREGOR (South Australia) (Vice-President of the Executive Council) . - I think it would be very unfair to do what Senator Gardiner has suggested. There are hundreds of men earning a livelihood in this trade in Australia. If we admit, free of duty, hides, limed or fleshed, or split, very little labour will be required to complete the process of manufacture. It is for the purpose of retaining for our own people all the work that we possibly can that this duty has been placed uponhides which have been prepared for use to the extent indicated. Green hides will, of course, be admitted free.
