Senator PEARCE (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) (Minister for Defence) - The answers to the honorable senator's questions are -

1.   23,000.

2.   Estimated.

3.   The preliminary organization of the staff provides for a Chief Protector, two Medical Inspectors, and three Inspectors. These are to devote their whole time to work in connexion with aborigines. It is contemplated that a number of persons mainly engaged otherwise will be appointed to perform certain duties connected with the department. Of the above, two Medical Inspectors and two Inspectors are now at work. The Chief Protector, Professor Baldwin Spencer, will leave next- month to take up his duties. Subsequent appointments will depend largely upon his recommendations.

4.   From the figures available, which in regard to population arc approximate only, the proportions appear to be as follow : -
