Mr E G Whitlam (WERRIWA, NEW SOUTH WALES) am asked the Prime Minister, upon notice:

Following his discussions in Indonesia, what are the best estimates he can give of (a) the proportion of the territory of East Timor which is accessible to the Indonesian Red Cross and to Indonesian officials and (b) the percentage of the population of East Timor which can be contacted by Indonesian Red Cross and by Indonesian officials (Hansard, 14 October 1976, page 1837).

Mr Malcolm Fraser - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(a)   and (b) The Government does not have the precise figures requested. The decision to channel aid through the

Indonesian Red Cross was taken because the Government recognised that this was the only way of ensuring that aid was provided to East Timor.
