Mr Les Johnson (HUGHES, NEW SOUTH WALES) asked the Prime Minister, upon notice:

(   1 ) Which paintings of the Australian National Gallery collection are presently on loan to the Governor-General.

(2)   What was the date on which each of these paintings was borrowed from the national collection.

(   3 ) What is the value of each painting.

Mr Malcolm Fraser - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows: (l)and(2)-

(3)   Works of art fluctuate in price almost all the time, and quite quickly the original cost may have no relation to the current value. Short of calling in independent, expert valuers- whose services would be costly and whose judgments would only be of short currency- there is no satisfactory way of putting a value on each painting.
