Mr Clyde Cameron (HINDMARSH, SOUTH AUSTRALIA) asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs, upon notice:

(   1 ) Did the Royal Commission on Australian Government Administration recommend in general terms that where the principal interest for Australian representation in a foreign country was the responsibility of a department other than the Department of Foreign Affairs, such as trade or immigration, that the Australian Ambassador or High Commissioner should be appointed from that department.

(2)   If so, when does the Government intend to give effect to the recommendation.

Mr Peacock (KOOYONG, VICTORIA) (Minister for Foreign Affairs) - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(   1 ) and (2) The Royal Commission commented along the lines set out by the honourable member, but made no formal recommendation in the sense he suggests. The Royal Commission's comments and proposals are being considered by, inter alia, the committee of Permanent Heads set up to advise the Government on the implementation of the Royal Commission's report.
