Mr Garland asked the Minister for Transport, upon notice:

(   1 ) What proportion of Australia's overseas trade does he propose should be carried in Australian ships.

(2)   To what extent has this already been achieved.

Mr Charles Jones - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(   1 ) The Government's objective is that an equitable share of Australia's trade should be carried in Australian ships. Increased shares will be achieved progressively over a number of years.

(2)   Australian flag participation in overseas liner trades is as follows:

West Coast North America

Allunga ', a 20,300 dwt vehicle deck ship, partially owned and operated by the Australian National Line in the Pacific Australia Direct Service.

East Coast North America

Australian Endeavour', a 26,400 dwt container ship, owned and operated by ANL in the Associated Container Transportation Australia/Australian National Line joint service. In addition, a larger container ship of 29,000 dwt is an order for delivery to ANL in 1 977.


Australian Enterprise', a 14,000 dwt vehicle deck ship, owned and operated by ANL in the Eastern Sea road Service (ESS).

Matthew Flinders', a 14,000 dwt vehicle deck ship, owned and operated by the Flinders Shipping Company in the ESS.

These two vessels are to be replaced in the ESS by the following vessels:

Australian Emblem' (ANL), a 24,000 dwt vehicle deck container ship, to be introduced January 1975 and a sister vessel owned by the Flinders Shipping Company to be introduced July 1975.

Increased Australian flag participation in the Japan trade was negotiated commercially in November 1973. Australia's share in the Northbound wool trade was increased from 23.3 per cent to 28.3 per cent from 1974 and the share of the Southbound trade from 17.2 per cent to 30.0 per cent by 1979.

East Asia

With the introduction of the second new vessel in the Japan trade in 1975, the 'Matthew Flinders' is to be purchased by ANL and operated in conjunction with the 'Australian Enterprise' in a new service, ANLINE, to the Philippines, Hong Kong and Korea.

New Zealand

Subject to availability of space, the ANL vessels 'Australian Endeavour' and 'Australian Exporter' carry cargo to New Zealand en route to Europe and North America respectively.


There are no Australian flag vessels currently engaged in the bulk mineral export trades on a regular basis. The ANL has on order four large modern bulk carriers of 121,000 to 138,000 dwt for delivery in 1976-77 for use in Australian overseas trades. It is estimated that these vessels would enable ANL to carry approximately 4 per cent of the main mineral exports on current export levels.
