Mr Lloyd asked the Minister for Health, upon notice:

(   1 ) What research is being conducted by his Department into the advantages of the addition of fluoride to town water supplies.

(2)   What assistance is being provided to State Health Departments on technical or educational matters to promote the fluoridation of water supplies.

(3)   What cities and towns in the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory have fluoridation.

Dr Everingham - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   (a) My Department and the National Health and Medical Research Council keep all aspects of fluoridation under review.

(b)   The fluoridation of Canberra's water supply was commenced in September 1964, and the dental health of children who have lived in Canberra since fluoridation commenced is assessed annually. The Table below shows the progressive improvement in the dental condition of children aged six to twelve years.

(2)   The only avenue of assistance to the States on matters relating to the fluoridation of water supplies is through the expert Committees of the National Health and Medical Research Council, in particular, the Dental Health, Environmental Health and Public Health Advisory Committees.

(3)   In the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, fluoridation is in operation in Canberra (1964), Darwin (1972) and Alice Springs ( 197 1 ).
