Mr Bennett asked the Minister for Health, upon notice:

(1)   Has his attention been drawn to statements by graziers' organisations that private aircraft returning to Australia from Bali and nearby islands are able to re-enter Australia without quarantine checks for foot and mouth and other animal diseases; if so, are these statements correct.

(2)   If the statements are correct, will he investigate the situation with a view to tightening the necessary procedures.

Dr Everingham (CAPRICORNIA, QUEENSLAND) (Minister for Health) - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   and (2) There have been rumours of private aircraft entering Australia without formal clearances but no cases have been substantiated on- investigation.
