Mr Wallis (GREY, SOUTH AUSTRALIA) asked the Minister for Transport, upon notice:

(1)   Have Commonwealth Railways recently made a decision to increase rentals for all residences owned by it and occupied by employees.

(2)   If so, what is the percentage increase of these rent rises.

(3)   Does the increase apply to residences in outlying areas on the Transcontinental and Central Australian lines.

Mr Charles Jones - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   Yes. Commonwealth Railways have increased the rentals applying to their residences at Port Augusta, Stirling North, Port Pirie, Alice Springs and Darwin with effect from 7 October 1973 to cover increased maintenance costs.

(2)   Rentals have been increased by $1.00 per week for residences currently renting at rates above $10.00 per week; by $0.75 per week for residences currently renting at rates between $7.50 per week and $10.00 per week; and by $0.50 per week for residences currently renting at less than $7.50 per week. The average percentage increase in rentals is 8.5 per cent.

(3)   No.
