Mr DALY (Grayndler Leader of the House) - Mr Speaker, I move:

That the Leader of the Country Party be suspended from the service of the House.

Mr Malcolm Fraser - Under the circumstances which prevail it is a disgraceful thing to do, to name the Leader of the Country Party on that fact.

Mr SPEAKER -Order! The right honourable Leader of the Country Party will be given every opportunity, as would any member, to withdraw and apologise.

Mr Mackellar - What does he have to apologise for?

Mr SPEAKER - For the defiance of the Chair; that is what he has to apologise for.

Mr Anthony - It was my understanding that the Leader of the House had taken a point of order -

Mr SPEAKER -Order! The Leader of the House had not taken a point of order at all. I asked the Leader of the Country Party to resume his seat. He defied the Chair. The Leader of the House was speaking to a personal explanation and not a point of order.

Mr Lynch - I rise on a point of order. I think members on both sides of the House will appreciate that the Leader of the House has spoken in a provocative manner and that he is responsible for what has taken place.

Mr SPEAKER -Order! The question is:

That the Leader of the Country. Party be suspended from the service of the House.

Those of that opinion say aye, to the contrary no. I think the ayes have it.

Opposition members - No.

Mr SPEAKER -The House will divide. (The bells being rung).

Mr Sinclair - Mr Speaker, will you make sure that the Leader of the House does not doctor the tapes which will explain what the actual motion was?

Mr Malcolm Fraser - Mr Speaker, have you any power to see that the Minister for Minerals and Energy is not sent overseas before the next day of sitting?

Question put:

That the Leader of the Country Party be suspended from the service of the House.
