Mr Scholes asked the Minister for Supply, upon notice:

(1)   What committees have been established to inquire into the future of the defence aircraft industry.

(2)   What machinery exists for consultation with employees in the industry.

(3)   Will he make an immediate statement to the House assuring Government employees in the industry that their accrued rights will be fully preserved and that they will not suffer disadvantage in any rearrangement of the industry.

Mr Barnard - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   A working group composed of representatives of the Department of Supply, Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation Pty Ltd and Hawker de Havilland Australia Pty Ltd was established by me to draw up a plan for the rationalisation of the Australian aircraft industry as a whole.

(2)   and (3) There has been liaison between the Government and the central bodies of employee organisations, and various union representatives have had access to me. Arrangements will be made for those bodies to be represented at future meetings to discuss, in particular, issues affecting the interests of employees. Plans for rationalisation will have proper regard for the rights and interests of those working in the industry.
