Department of the Northern Territory: Accommodation (Question No. 617) Mr Garland asked the Minister for the Northern Territory, upon notice:

(1)   Has his attention been drawn to the reply by the Minister for Services and Property to my Question No. 174 (Hansard 16 May 1973, page 2250), in which he suggested that details relating to occupancies by Commonwealth Authorities in buildings not owned by the Commonwealth should be obtained from the Ministers concerned?

(2)   Will he provide details as set out in that question, of all places occupied by his Department and by Authorities under his control in buildings not owned by the Commonwealth?

Mr Enderby - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   Yes.

(2)   (a) The number of buildings not owned by the

Commonwealth but occupied by Commonwealth Departments and Authorities in the Northern Territory is 46. (b) (i) Range of rentals paid in the Northern

Territory is $1.00-6.50 per square foot. foot.

(ii)   Average rental paid in:

(a)   the Northern Territory is $3.13 per square foot; and

(b)   in Darwin is $3.53 per square foot.

(3)   By way of explanation, the leased accommodation function for all Commonwealth purposes is still being performed by officers of my, Department in the Northern Territory pending its transfer to the Department of Services and Property. Many units of other Departments established in the Territory are relatively small in size and sharing of leased buildings by more than one Department is the rule rather than the exception. Accordingly, the above figures cover all Commonwealth Departments located in the Territory, and also Authorities coming within the ambit of my portfolio. Further, in many leased buildings, the Commonwealth would not be the sole occupier.
