Mr Garland (CURTIN, WESTERN AUSTRALIA) asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice:

(1)   What was the ratio of civilian to Service personnel in each of the Service Departments as at 31 December (a) 1970, (b) 1971 and (c) 1972.

(2)   What steps have been taken by each of the Departments to substitute Service personnel wim civilians.

Mr Barnard (BASS, TASMANIA) (Minister for Defence) - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   The ratio of civilian to Service personnel in each of the Service Departments for the dates indicated were:

 

(2)   Each of the Service Departments have appropriate machinery which is intended to ensure that individual positions are scrutinised to determine whether they can be occupied by civilians, as required by Government policy.
