Mr Lynch asked the Treasurer, upon notice:

What was the average number of (a) single and (b) married women in the workforce in each year since 1962.


Mr Crean - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

The Commonwealth Statistician has supplied the following information in reply to the honourable member's question.

Estimates of the average number of married women and other females in the civilian labour force in each year from 1964 to 1972, derived from the quarterly population survey, are as follows:

 

The population survey was instituted on an Australiawide basis in February 1964. Information is therefore not available for the years 1962 and 1963. It should be noted that the group'other females' comprises widowed, divorced and never married women, and that persons enlisted in the Defence Forces are excluded from the estimates.
