Mr SNEDDEN (Bruce) (Leader of the Opposition) - by leave - Before the question is put on the motion that the House take note of the paper, I take this opportunity to make a brief statement. The Treasurer (Mr Crean) last night very courteously provided me with a copy of this statement. He properly recognises the great significance in national terms of what is described in the statement. I agree with the course he has followed, but because it is of such importance I do not want to reply to the statement immediately. I should like the matter to be adjourned so that it may be debated properly and adequately. I ask the Treasurer for his assurance that the matter will be debated and not left at the bottom of the notice paper. My suggestion is that the Thursday afternoon of the next sitting week would be an appropriate time for the matter to be debated.

Mr Crean - I assure the Leader of the Opposition that an opportunity will be afforded for the matter to be debated.

Debate (on motion by Mr Snedden) adjourned.
