To the honourable the Speaker and members of the House of Representatives in Parliament assembled. The humble petition of certain people of the Torres

Strait respectfully showeth that they wish to remain Australians and do not wish the border between Queensland and Papua New Guinea altered. Your petitioners therefore humbly pray that:

(l)   this Parliament re-affirm our rights to our islands, our ancestoral homes for generations before the discovery of Australia;

(2)   you recognise that we are Australians and do not wish to become citizens of Papua New Guinea:

(3)   you help us preserve our distinctive cultural language and political identity;

(4)   and that the Right Honourable the Prime Minister visit our islands to meet us as citizens to hear our views on a matter that will determine our future and that of our children; and your petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray. by Mr Fulton.

Petition received.
