Mr Kennedy asked the Minister for the Interior, upon notice:

(1) What sum was expended by the Commonwealth on civil defence in each year since 1945.

(2) What is the (a) name and (b) nature of each course in civil defence offered by (i) his Department and (ii) other bodies.

(3) How many persons completed these courses in 1970 and how many are undertaking a course in 1971.

(4) How many (a) full-time and (b) part-tune civil defence staff were employed by his Department in each of the years 1950, 1955, 1960, 1965 and 1970.


Mr Hunt - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   Commonwealth expenditure on civil defence since 1945 has been as under -

Prior to 1955-56 there was no separate record of expenditure as it was absorbed in the Department of Interior's figures.

 

(2)   (i)(a) and (b) The courses for 1971 being conducted at the Commonwealth Civil Defence School Mt Macedon. are as under:

 

(2)   (ii) There are no other training establishments maintained by either the Commonwealth or the States but each Stale Civil Defence organisation conducts its own training programme for volunteers complementing the instruction given at Mt Macedon.

(3)   In 1970 . 930 students attended Hie Civil Defence School. Up to the end of October 1971 the number of students was 789 and there are six more courses still to be held this year.

(4)   (a) and (b) There are only full-time employees on the staff of the Civil Defence School and Directorate. The numbers employed at 30th June nf the years mentioned were:
