Mr Cohen asked the Minister for Shipping and Transport upon notice:

(1)   Has the Advisory Committee on Safety in Vehicle Design, a committee of the Australian Transport Advisory Council, discussed the proposal by the United States National Highway Safety Bureau to introduce a motor vehicle safety standard high speed warning and control which will govern cars to a speed of 95 mph and give a warning signal at 80 mph.

(2)   If so, what was the result of its deliberations.

Mr Nixon - The answer to the honourable member's- question is as follows:

(1)   Yes. The proposal to which you refer has been put to the United States automotive industry and other interested parties for comment. I understand the period for comment has expired but I am not aware of any decision on the matter being taken so far by the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

(2)   The Advisory - Committee on Safety in Vehicle Design has not yet reported to the Australian Transport Advisory Council.
