Mr Whitlam asked the Minister for Defence, upon notice:

(1)   How many officers have (a) sought and (b) received permission to resign from each of the Services in each of the last 5 years and so far this year.

(2)   Will he provide an answer to this question before the debate on the estimates for his Department.

The number of officers (including those of the Women's Services) who sought permission to resign their commissions and the number of applications approved in each of the 5 years from 1965-66 to 1969-70 and during the first 2 months of 1970-71 is as follows:
