Mr Whitlam asked the Minister representing the Minister for Civil Aviation, upon notice:

(1)   To what extent has (a) the Commonwealth and (b) the State of New South Wales accepted responsibility for planning and paying for access across Cook's River to the Sydney (KingsfordSmith) airport international terminal.

(2)   How soon will such access be provided.

Mr Swartz (DARLING DOWNS, QUEENSLAND) (Minister for National Development) - The Minister for Civil Aviation has provided the following answer to the honourable member's question:

(I)   The New South Wales Department of Main Roads is responsible for the planning of the bridge.

The Commonwealth has -agreed to accept financial responsibility for that portion of the bridge on airport land and for additional width of the bridge necessitated by merging lanes from within the airport. The Commonwealth proportion of the cost has been assessed as 38%

(2)   I understand that the Department of Main Roads has awarded a contract for the construction, of the bridge and that the work is due for completion by the end of December 1970.
