Mr Grassby asked the Minister for Shipping and Transport, upon notice:

(1)   When was the joint study of proposals to standardise the Tocumwal/Mangalore railway line carried out (Hansard 9th April 1970, page 1020).

(2)   What personnel were engaged on the actual investigation.

(3)   Did members of the study group confer with the authorities and organisations which made the sixteen submissions to his Department on the desirability of the project; if not, why not.

(4)   Will he make the report available to the Parliament and to interested bodies.

Mr Sinclair - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:

(1)   and (2) The joint study was carried out in September 1965 by the Commissioners for Railways of Victoria and the Commonwealth.

(3)   The 1965 study was based on a joint review of an economic examination undertaken in 1962 by the Victorian Railways. This study took into account discussions between the Victorian Minister for Transport and representative Councillors from Shires in the Riverina. The 1965 review did nol call for discussions with organisations with interests in the area.

(4)   As the reports deal with matters of State jurisdiction, the question of the release of those reports should be addressedto the State authorities.
