Mr Coutts (GRIFFITH, QUEENSLAND) s asked the Minister for Trade and Industry, upon notice -

1.   What quantity of sugar was sold on the home market during 1964-65 and what was the price per ton?

2.   What quantity of sugar was exported to Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America respectively, during 1964-65 and what was the price per ton received for sales to each of these countries?


Mr McEwen - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follow!! -

1.   The wholesale price of sugar per ton in major Australian cities is $180-52 for 1A grade refined sugar, with related prices for other grades. The net return to mills from sales of raw sugar on the home market from the 1964-65 season averaged $1-20.75 per ton on sales of 628,567 tons of raw sugar. -2. The following table shows the quantities of sugar exported by Australia in 1964-65 to Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of. America and the average return received from sales to each of these countries. The average return has been calculated from the f.o.b. value of exports for 1964-65 published by the Commonwealth Statistician.
