1.   When were the membership and terms of reference of the Economic Committee of Enquiry announced?

2.   When was the Economic and Financial Surveys Division of the Treasury established and what are its functions

Mr Harold Holt - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows -

1.   The Government's decision to institute an inquiry into the economy, including the terms of reference, was announced in a statement in tha House of Representatives by the Prime Minister on 17th October 1962. The membership of the Committee, together with amendments to the terms of reference originally envisaged, were announced by the Prime Minister in a statement in the House of Representatives on 13 th February 1963.

2.   The establishment of the Economic and Financial Survey Division of the Treasury was planned during the middle of 1962, and became the subject of a formal request to the Public Service Board for the creation of appropriate staff positions on 31st August 1962. These positions were finally approved by the" Board on 26th November 1962. The chief function of the Division is, broadly, to extend forward, beyond the period immediately ahead, the more important estimates and analyses of economic and financial trends such as are carried out, in respect of the shorter term, within other parts of the General Financial and Economic Policy Branch.
