Mr CALWELL - I ask the Minister for Labour and National Service a question. Last week I asked him whether it was a fact that automation on the waterfront would result ultimately in 80 per cent, of the wharf labourers being rendered redundant. The awful word " containerisation " is used to describe current developments. I now ask the Minister: Was he misinformed or merely uninformed when, in his answer, he denied that automation would proceed so quickly? I also ask him: Is it a fact that on the ship " Kooringa " eight men are employed in stowing cargo and about 32 others are, by special arrangement, employed on the wharf, although on other ships of the same size no fewer than six gangs, totalling 120 men, are employed? If these are facts, what does the Minister and his Department propose to do about the problem of automation on the waterfront?
