Mr DAVIDSON (DAWSON, QUEENSLAND) (Postmaster-General) - As the honorable member for Barton well knows, there is a long-established practice concerning the payment or otherwise of rates by Commonwealth instrumentalities. That policy was applied also by the previous Labour government. The position will not be changed so far as the Post Office is concerned. It is this: When we are occupying, for residential or other purposes, properties which are not the property of the Post Office, we make an ex gratia payment in lieu of rates. That practice will be continued.
