Mr HOLTEN (INDI, VICTORIA) - My question is addressed to the Treasurer. Is it a fact that the present hire-purchase terms available to the people of Australia are playing a big part in the over-expansion of many industries, creating a misleading balance between supply and demand and in addition encouraging individuals to incur debts that are too heavy a burden upon their financial resources? Will the Treasurer consider calling a special meeting of State Premiers to ask them to introduce Australia-wide uniformity at least for minimum deposits and maximum repayment terms for articles purchased under hire-purchase agreements? Alternatively, is it possible for the Commonwealth Government to introduce measures which would achieve this object?
