Mr Swartz (DARLING DOWNS, QUEENSLAND) z asked the Acting Prime Minister, upon notice -

1.   Is it a fact that moves are taking place in Toowoomha, Queensland, for the establishment of a university in that city as part of the Queensland university system?

2.   If so, could the Universities Commission be informed of this proposal and be asked if it would be prepared to discuss it with the Queensland authorities?

Mr McEwen - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows: -

1.   Recently a university college was opened at Townsville. The Townsville college is the first step in a Queensland plan to establish regional university colleges, and similar centres are planned for Rockhampton and Toowoomba.

2.   The Australian Universities Commission has been associated with the planning for this development from its inception and will continue to assist in its development in every way possible.
