Mr ROBERTON - In reply to the honorable member could I say that the qualifications for the payment of an invalid pension or unemployment or sickness benefit are laid down in the Social Services Act and it is my duty to administer the act in the strict terms of the letter and spirit of the act. I do that to the very best of my ability. 1 have no power to withhold pensions from people who apply and qualify for them. I am duty-bound to administer the law as it is given to me by the Parliament. I do that. If there is any confusion in the mind of the honorable member for Shortland as to any particular case, I will be glad to discuss that case with him, but this is neither the appropriate place nor the appropriate time to deal with an individual case.
