Mr TOWNLEY - As I said yesterday, the Chief of the Naval Staff is to go abroad and discuss some of these matters. At this .point of time, we are definitely not considering the purchase of nuclear-powered submarines, for the simple reason that they are so costly that a country of this size could not afford them. What the Naval authorities are considering is the very latest type of conventional-powered submarine. When they have examined them and discussed the possibility of manufacture in Australia and so on, they will make recommendations to the Government, and the recommendations will be considered.
