Mr KEARNEY (CUNNINGHAM, NEW SOUTH WALES) - I ask the Prime Minister whether he has given consideration to the dreadful waste of life and widespread unhappiness occurring in Australia as a result of the high accident rate on our roads - a tragedy which is reaching national proportions. Is it a fact that in New South Wales alone some 753 deaths have occurred so far this year, and with the holiday season approaching the grim toll could easily result in a total of 1,000 lives being lost? Will the Prime Minister favorably consider convening a conference of all State governments with a view to designing common laws, including the imposition of a speed limit on vehicles by mechanical means, to reduce the number of people killed and maimed on our roads?
