Mr King (WIMMERA, VICTORIA) g asked the Minister for Primary Industry, upon notice -

1.   How many barley boards are operating in the Commonwealth?

2.   Are exporters required to obtain a licence to export malting barley as distinct from milling and feed types?

3.   How much malting barley was (a) grown in Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia and Victoria, respectively, (b) purchased h/ Western Australia and Queensland from South Australia and Victoria, and (c) exported overseas from each of these four States, during the year 1958-59?

4.   What was the (a) average price obtained for the interstate sales and (b) price obtained in each of the four States in respect of exports overseas?

5.   How much milling barley was exported overseas from each of these four States during the same year, and what was the average price obtained?


Mr Adermann - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows: -

1.   The Australian Barley Board operates in Victoria and South Australia and a board operates in each of the States of Queensland and Western Australia.

2.   Exporters are required to obtain a licence to export all types of barley. 3. (a) Production of 2-row barley, i.e., malting type, in 1958-59 was-

 

Not all malting type barley is of malting grade and some Cape barley is used for malting, (b) Information on interstate sales has not been made public by the State boards, (c) Information on the break-up of exports into malting and other grades of barley is not available but total exports in 1958-59 were-

 

4.   Information on average prices for interstate sales is not made public by the State boards but the average prices for all barley exports in 1958-59 were -

 

5.   Information on the break-up of exports into malting and other grades of barley is not available but total exports from each of the States concerned are shown in 3 (c) and 4.
