Mr Whitlam m asked the acting Minister for External Affairs, upon notice -

What steps have been taken or are being taken to ratify (a) the 1948 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, (b) the 1948 International Convention for the Protection of Literary, Scientific and Artistic Works, (c) the 1952 Universal Copyright Convention, (d) the 1954 Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the event of Armed Conflict and (e) the 1957 Universal Postal Convention?


Sir Garfield Barwick - The answer to the honorable member's question is as follows: -

(a)   Australia's instrument of acceptance of the 1948 International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea was deposited on 6th October, 1959, and the Convention will enter into force for Australia on 6th January, 1960. (b) and (c) The Copyright Law Review Committee is at present considering the question of whether Australia should ratify the 1948 International Convention for the Protection of Literary, Scientific and Artistic Works and 1952 Universal Copyright Convention (d) Australia has not taken action towards ratifying the 1954 Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the event of Armed Conflict, pending its ratification by the major Powers (e) Australia's instrument of ratification of the 1957 Universal Postal Convention was deposited on 29th April, 1959.
