Mr DRUMMOND (NEW ENGLAND, NEW SOUTH WALES) - I desire to ask the Minister for Territories whether he has had brought to his notice a recent statement by a leading industrialist who bitterly criticized the health facilities in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea. Can the Minister inform the House what is the exact position in the Territory, and what steps have been taken to bring the health services, including hospitals, up to date? Can he inform the House of the position in relation to medical services in particular? Further, will the Minister comment on the statement that considerable numbers of natives are dying, particularly from tuberculosis, because they do not receive proper attention? Will the Minister also inform the House whether this disease is largely fostered in the highlands by the ancient native custom of sleeping in small closed huts, and will he outline the action taken by the administration to overcome this ageold problem and to encourage the natives to adopt more hygienic housing?
