Mr Ward d asked the Treasurer, upon notice -

What amounts have been paid out of Commonwealth overseas funds in each of the last ten years on account of (a) overseas remittances to relatives of Australian citizens, (b) travel expenditure, (c) interest on overseas borrowings, (d) shipping freights, and (e) any other charges?


Sir Arthur Fadden - The answer to the honorable member's question is as follows: -

(a)   Official estimates of personal remittances overseas in each of the years 1946-47 to 1955-56 by Australian residents including remittances to relatives of Australian citizens for which separate information is not available are as follows: -

 

(b)   Estimates of the amounts spent overseas by Australian residents travelling abroad in each of the last ten years are as follows: -

 

(c)   Interest payments in each of the years 1946- 47 to 1955-56 on public authority borrowings overseas (including charges in respect of drawings from the International Monetary Fund) have been as follows:-

 

(d)   Estimates of freight payable overseas in each of the last ten years are as follows: -

 

(e)   The total in each of the last ten years, as shown in the Commonwealth Statistician's estimates of Australia's balance of payments, of other " invisible " debts (excluding undistributed income of Australian companies accruing to overseas investors) was as follows: -
