Mr J R FRASER ser asked the Minister representing the Minister for Shipping and Transport, upon notice:

1.   Is there under consideration any proposal that the railway between Queanbeyan, New South Wales, and Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, at present controlled by Commonwealth Railways, should be transferred to the control of the New South Wales Government Railways?

2.   If so, has consideration been given to the leave, superannuation, long service, and other entitlement* of employees who may be transferred.

3.   What benefit is expected to flow from the transfer?


Mr Townley - The Minister for Shipping and Transport has furnished the following replies: -

1.   The Government has not given any consideration to a. proposal that the railway between

Queanbeyan, New South Wales and Canberra, Australian Capital Territory at present controlled by Commonwealth Railways should be transferred to the control of the New South Wales Railways The Commonwealth Railways Commissioner ha.tentatively discussed the matter with the New South Wales Railways Commissioner, who it i.* understood is investigating the proposition.

2.   This matter will be given consideration it and when it becomes necessary.

3.   It will be appreciated that transfer will only take place if there is some mutual benefit to both Commonwealth and New South Wales railway.and as the matter is not yet beyond the preliminary discussion stage it is not possible transwer this question.
