Mr Ward d asked the Prime Minister, upon notice -

1.   What is the cost per annum to the Government of the Prime Minister's Canberra residence for (a) staffing, (b) maintenance, including gardens, and (c) any other items?

2.   Are expenses under these heads met entirely from the public purse?

Mr Menzies - The answer to the honorable member's questions is as follows: - 1 and 2. The Lodge is owned by the Commonwealth and is provided as a residence in Canberra for the Prime Minister of the day. Therefore, the Commonwealth meets the cost of maintaining the buildings and the grounds; the cost of staff employed in running the household: and the cost of items such as light and power, fuel and telephones. Other expenses associated with running the Lodge are a personal responsibility.
