Mr Ward d asked the Prime Minister, upon notice -

1.   Did he, during the 1949 federal election campaign,either by speech or by newspaper advertisement appearing over his reproduced signature, stale that the Liberal party, when returned to office, would regard as its permanent and most vital responsibility the speeding up of the housing programme, and that it gave this firm undertaking to the many thousands of young engaged couples in Australia who were forced to postpone marriage because they could not get a home of their own and to couples already married who were suffering the same penalty?

2.   If so, are there still thousands of young couples in Australia who have had to delay marriage because of their inability to secure a home in which to live, and, in addition, have many married couples been forced to live separately for the same reason?

Mr Menzies - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows: -

1.   and 2. The Government is proud and justifiably so of its record of assistance in the housing field. For the rest of the honorable member's question, I refer him to my statement on housing made in the House on 20th March, 1957.

1.   Is he able to say whether (a) a man arrested on the 27th November. 1956, at Surfer's Paradise, Queensland, originally gave his name as Vladimir Petrov but was subsequently charged under the name of John Olsen, (b) the Brisbane " Sunday Mail" previously reported that Mr. Vladimir Petrov and his wife were holidaying on the south coast of Queensland, and (c) that the man charged under the name of Olsen failed to appear in court and forfeited his bail?

2.   If the position is as stated. was the person involved the former Russian legation official who, with his wife, sought and obtained political asylum in Australia?

Mr Menzies s. - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows: - 1 and 2. I have been informed that Mr. Vladimir Petrov was arrested at Surfer's Paradise on 27th November. 1956. on a charge of drunkenness, gave his name as John Olsen, failed to appear in court and forfeited his bail.
