Mr SPEAKER - On Thursday last the honorable member for Bradfield asked me whether a light could be affixed to the front of the Speaker's chair and operated so as to indicate to an honorable member addressing the House that his speaking time was about to expire. Precisely the same request was made about two years ago to my predecessor in the chair. The request was refused on the ground that the responsibility for the timing of speeches rested upon the member, and to this end extra clocks had been installed in the chamber so that honorable members would have no difficulty in determining their speaking time. I find myself in full agreement with those views, and I regret that I cannot accede to the honorable member's request.
