Mr JAMES (HUNTER, NEW SOUTH WALES) - Is the Prime Minister aware that a circular has been issued to government departments with instructions that the services of retired officials st present employed temporarily shall be dispensed with hy the 31st August? ls he also aware that, owing to the difficulty of accommodating staff in Canberra, a number of experienced retired officials doing valuable work will be discharged without the possibility of their replacement by younger men? Is it a fact that the work of some departments will be seriously affected if these instructions are strictly enforced? If so, will the Prime Minister take steps to alleviate the position, by retaining retired officers in positions where ex-servicemen or younger officers cannot be obtained to carry on the work?
