Mr Francis s asked the Treasurer, upon notice - =

1.   What amounts of land tax and income tax were outstanding for each of the years 1943-44, 1044-45 -and 1945-40?

2.   What efforts are being made to collect these amounts?

Mr Chifley - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows :-

1.   The total amount of land tax assessed but uncollected at the 30th June,. 1046, was £306,693. The amount of income tax assessed but uncollected at the 30th June, 194G, was approximately £41,000,000. The separate amounts of land tax and income tax outstanding for each financial year have not been calculated, but the greater part of tax assessed but uncollected at the 30th June, 1Q4G, would he attributable- to the financial year 1945-40:

2.   Every effort possible having regard to the extra burden placed upon the Taxation Depart-, ment by war-time legislation and the difficulties of obtaining and .training staff is constantly made to collect outstanding tax as it becomes due. It should lie remembered that a considerable portion of the amount outstanding was not actually overdue at the 30th June because the time allowed for payment had not expired.
