Mr Gullett (HENTY, VICTORIA) t asked the Prime Minister, upon notice -

1.   Has he any knowledge of the reported intention of the Victorian Government to seek from the Commonwealth a guarantee of steel supplies for a projected scheme of steel housing in that State?

2.   Can the Commonwealth give any such guarantee while coal-miners, steel-workers and others are constantly involved in industrial disputes and stoppages?

Mr Chifley - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows : -

1.   The subject has been mentioned to me by the Premier.

2.   Consideration will be given to this matter if and when an official request is received from the Victorian Government. It is pointed out that the allocation, amongst housing and other projects, of steel supplied through Commonwealth Government instrumentalities is a matter- for determination by the Victorian Government.
