Mr Francis s asked the Prime Minister, upon notice -

1.   What was the staff employed in Commonwealth departments, (a) permanent, and (b) temporary, at the peak period of the war?

2.   What are the relative figures at the latest available date? 3., Have the services of any returned soldiers been dispensed with in effecting reductions in staffs?

4.   If so, how many?

5.   Is it proposed to continue the employment of married women in Commonwealth departments now that the war has ended?

6.   If so, (a) how many married women are employed at the present time, and (b) in which departments are they employed?

7.   Is it intended to dispense with their services and to give ex-servicemen an opportunity to fill their positions?.

8.   If so, when will this be done?


Mr Chifley - The information is being obtained and will be made a vailable to the honorable member as early' as practicable.
