Mr HUTCHINSON - Can the Prime Minister say whether the recent decision taken at the Australian Labour party conference in New South Wales against the admission of . Communists means that Communistcontrolled unions will be denied affiliation with the New South Wales Trades and Labour Council?

Mr CHIFLEY - The Trades and Labour Council has no direct relation to or affiliation with the Australian Labour party. It is an organization of trade unions. It is true, of course, that a great number of those associated with the Trades and Labour Council are also associated in some way with the Australian Labour party. It is also true that some of the unions which make up the Trades and Labour Council are affiliated with the Australian Labour party. However, the Trades and Labour Council is not the governing body of the Australian Labour party.
