Mr HOLLOWAY (MELBOURNE, VICTORIA) - During the last war, women in England did heavier work than this. In Australia, women have not previously done this class of. work, and there is no award that would cover them. The nearest approach to an award of the court was that which fixed a rate of pay for a certain class of work, irrespective of what sex performed it. That does not apply to the metal trades. It applies to the boot trade, the clothing trade, the printing trade, and clerical work.

Mr Hughes - There is differentiation from 60 per cent. of the male wage upwards.
