The following answers to questions were circulated: -

Basic Wage


Mr Holt asked the Minister for Labour and National Service, upon notice -

What was the adult basic wage rate payable to (a) males, and (&) females, after cost of living adjustments, in (i) Sydney, (ii) Melbourne, and (iii) five capitals, for the September quarter, 1938, September quarter, 1939, September quarter, 1940, September quarter, 1941, and March quarter, 1942?


Mr Ward - The answers to the honorable member's questions are contained in the following schedule: -

 

Compensation for LOSS of Employment.


Mr Nairn asked the Minister for War Organization of Industry, upon notice -

1.   What are the proposals of the Government for making compensation to people who lose employment because of the compulsory closing of industries?

2.   Will compensation be made to a person carrying on a one-man business whose business is destroyed by reason of his being called up for compulsory service?


Mr Dedman - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows : -

1.   The question of payment to persons disemployed because of compulsory closing of industries is at present receiving the attention of the Government, but finality has not yet been reached.

2.   There is no present intention to provide compensation in circumstances such as those mentioned by the honorable member.
