Mr Barnard d asked the Minister representing the Minister for Commerce, upon notice -

1.   What quantity of New Zealand potatoes has so far been admitted into Australia?

2.   For what period will the present permit continue ?

3.   In view of this partial lifting of the embargo upon New Zealand potatoes when prices are high, what protection will be afforded Tasmanian growers when market prices are below cost of production?


Sir Frederick Stewart - The answers to the honorable member's questions are as follows: -

1.   A permit has been issued for the importation of 1,000 tons of potatoes to be delivered at the rate of 250 tons a week. So far only 1½ tons, representing an experimental shipment by the New Zealand Internal Marketing Department, have been received.

2.   The 31st May, 1939.

3.   Full consideration will be given to this matter when the occasion arises.
